This upcoming winter storm event is expected to last from late Monday through Wednesday evening. As usual there are some uncertainty in moisture and temperature trends, so the forecast will be updated as conditions change.
This is a two part winter storm with part 1 expected to be Monday evening through Tuesday. There could be a break for several hours Tuesday afternoon. Then part 2 of the winter storm would begin Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
A low pressure system in the Gulf will combine with an upper level system to bring a good chance of snow to the area Monday night. Some sleet may mix in with the snow mainly in areas south of the Tennessee River.
The Huntsville weather service office has two to four inches of snow forecast for the area for Monday night into Tuesday morning. A Winter Storm Watch has been posted for the period, running from Monday at 6 pm CST until noon Tuesday.
The Birmingham weather office feels that confidence is increasing that one to three inches of snow and sleet combined will fall across north central Alabama. The best chance north of a line from Millport to Gardendale to Jacksonville.
In addition to snow and sleet up to one quarter of an inch of freezing rain may accumulate along I-20 from near Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston and including surrounding areas.
