High pressure remains the dominant weather feature this morning over Alabama.
We expect to see another hot and mostly dry day across the state, as moisture depth is fairly limited…and not expected to increase significantly until late tonight and Friday.
The heat index will be the main weather factor today, with afternoon highs in the low and mid 90’s. The heat and humidity will push the heat index over 100 in many locations.
With the heat and humidity, you can expect to see a pop-up thunderstorm anywhere…the chances of seeing that today is 20 to 30%.
A weak frontal boundary at the surface may drop down into Alabama later this afternoon. This could provide a focus for some thunderstorm development.
We are also going to monitor upper level impulses that develop to our northwest. These impulses will flare up and produced thunderstorms in the Mid-West region and then move south and east towards Alabama.
It looks as though we may see several good chances of rain over the next several days starting on Friday. This type of weather pattern could set up some local areas of heavy rain totals. While the heaviest rain totals forecast by the models are to be just north of the state, we will be watching this system closely through the weekend.
Friday through Sunday look to be around a 50/50 chance each day of getting wet. In areas that do get caught in the storms, we expect plenty of lightning, strong gusty winds and torrential rain.
This weather pattern can easily throw us a few surprises, so the weather forecast could quickly change…so stay tuned.
