Another day with above normal temperatures is on tap for today.
The afternoon high temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80’s as we experience one more very warm day.
A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible mainly in northwest and north central Alabama this afternoon well ahead of a cold front.
A deepening upper trough over the Rockies and Northern Plains is bringing severe weather across the Central Plains and will be the main player for the weather tonight into this weekend.
This system will be moving into northwest Alabama tonight and track across Alabama through Friday.
We will be watching for the potential for some strong to severe thunderstorms starting late tonight over northwest Alabama. The main threat looks to be straight-line winds with this system.
At this point, we will be watching development out west of here this afternoon and track the storms as they move east. The front and associated thunderstorms will move east through the state on Friday, and this will quickly end any additional rain chances.
Another noticeable impact will be a much cooler airmass behind the front. Temperatures by Saturday will be 20 to 25 degrees lower than we are experiencing now.
I’ve included a Storm Prediction Center graphic for today. There is a large area of a ‘slight risk’ of severe weather noted to our west through the day today.
