The dry start to the New Year is not going to last much longer. The weak area of high pressure over the area will continue to weaken.
This will allow rain to spread eastward through the rest of today and tonight. The latest model analysis indicates the rain could move in a bit sooner than earlier forecast.
We believe that the onset of the rain showers this afternoon will be light with the heavier and more widespread rainfall moving in tonight.
There will be some sleet mixed in this afternoon especially over the northwestern sections. Temperatures will be above freezing, so no accumulation or travel issues.
Widespread rain will be likely by Friday morning as the weather pattern sets up for another heavy rain event for Alabama.
Additional showers and thunderstorms will continue through much of the weekend…and perhaps winding down a bit on Sunday.
Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches appear to be common across Alabama, and as a result…we will be watching for the possibility of some flooding issues.
