Winter Update from Huntsville

Winter storm system will impact the region today…
Precipitation will continue to overspread the region this morning ahead of a developing Low pressure system to our west.

The initial precipitation will fall as a mixture of sleet and freezing rain, before southerly winds bring warmer air northward into north Alabama late this morning.

As this occurs, the precipitation will transition to rain for most of the area. The exception to this will be across far northwest Alabama. The surface temperatures are expected to remain near freezing for most of the day.

Winds will shift to the north late this afternoon…and the rain may briefly change back to freezing rain before ending as snow flurries late tonight.

The NWS in Huntsville has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Lauderdale and Colbert counties until 6 pm this evening. Freezing rain accumulations up to 3 tenths of an inch are possible in these areas.

A Winter Weather Advisory has also been issued until 6 pm this evening for Jackson, DeKalb, Marshall, Madison, Morgan, Limestone, Lawrence, and Franklin counties in northern Alabama.

Accumulations of light freezing rain is expected…but mainly early this morning and briefly late this afternoon. Ice accumulations up to 1 tenth of an inch are possible. Some sleet may also occur at times but should result in only minor accumulations.
