Birmingham Issues Winter Storm Advisories

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Winter Storm Warning for significant amounts of ice combined with periods of sleet at time… which is in effect from 3 am to 3 pm Thursday.

* Event… significant accumulating ice in the pink shaded areas… with the possibility of mixing in with sleet at times.

* Counties: Blount, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Winston Counties. This covers areas along and north of a line from Millport… to Cordova… to Oneonta

* Timing… from 3 am Thursday morning through 3 pm Thursday afternoon.

* Accumulations… ice totals of over three tenths for the warned area. There could be a very small section that receives some sleet accumulation as well… but the biggest concern remains icing potential.

In addition…a Freezing Rain Advisory has been issued for the counties just southeast of the warning area. These counties are indicated in the purple shaded areas.

Counties: Bibb, Calhoun, Cherokee, Etowah, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Pickens, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter and Tuscaloosa. This covers areas north of Livingston… to Pelham… to Pell City… to Anniston.

Freezing Rain is likely in the advisory area, however amounts are expected to be a bit lighter than areas just to the northwest in the warning.
